Day 2: Rough Marsh and the Rat King

Dwarf-hold-turned-mermaid-pool was attacked long ago by the Rat King. He was cursed with "No spoon will ever sate you" (a la the Witcher); ravenous hunger took the ghoulish critter, which began collecting spoons in vain to reverse the curse.

His victims were turned to Wisps, cursed with "A light will always shine on your vices", and was repelled at heavy cost to the dwarves (and any guests present).

One of the dungeon's rooms has a machine blocking the way; I think this machine barred the Rat King's progress.
What made the Rat King return to some deserted castle? Was it deserted when he arrived? Can't wait to find out!
